In the spirit with Christmas worship services

imageThe holidays aren’t all presents and parties, you know. For some in LGBT Atlanta, there is a very specific “reason for the season,” and gay-inclusive congregations offer them Christmas Eve and Christmas Day services.

Many of the houses of worship who offer gay-friendly Sunday Services on our weekly calendar take Christmas back to basics on Thursday and Friday with Eucharists, pageants, candlelight worship and sermons that put the holiday in religious perspective for their congregants.

All Saints Episcopal Church makes a day of it Thursday with four services from 3 p.m. through 10 p.m. that give you plenty of chances to bring the Christian holiday to life. You can also join the church for a Christmas Day service at 10 a.m.

Other large churches with large gay contingents also pull out the stops for Christmas. St. Mark’s United Methodist Church gives you three chances to worship on Christmas Eve, at 5 p.m. (en espanol), 7 p.m. and 11 p.m.

St. Bartholomew’s Episcopal Church offers three Thursday holiday services at 4:30 p.m., 7:30 p.m. and 10:30 p.m., plus a Christmas Day service at 10:30 a.m. on Friday.

The Cathedral of St. Philip brings Christmas Eve to its congregation at 4 p.m., 8 p.m. and 11 p.m., as well as a Christmas Day service at 10 a.m.

Atlanta’s gay-specific Metropolitan Community Churches do up Christmas Eve on Thursday as well. Christ Covenant MCC holds its service at 11 p.m., and First MCC of Atlanta offers up the spirit of Christmas at 10:30 p.m. The Journey MCC in Conyers presents Christmas Eve services at 8 p.m.

The religious spirit of Christmas Eve is also celebrated Thursday at Lawrenceville First Christian Church at 5:30 p.m. and at St. John’s Lutheran Church at 7:30 p.m.

Not only does the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Atlanta do up Christmas Eve with two Thursday services at 5:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m., they also offer Christmas Dinner on Friday at 2 p.m.

These are just nine examples of Christmas Eve and Christmas Day services with Atlanta’s gay-friendly congregations. Click on the links to find contact information and resources to learn the details of each service. By no means is the list exhaustive, but we hope it affirms that LGBT Christinas who want to put the Christ in Christmas certainly have options.

If we missed one, by all means {encode=”[email protected]” title=”write us”} with the name of the congregation, the address of its meeting place, the time and nature of the event, and contact information. You can also submit a listing for worship services, potluck dinners or any special event with our easy-to-use submission form — a perfect way to let LGBT Atlanta know about your holiday happenings.

The calendar, which offers nightlife, community, sports, arts and entertainment–and now more religious–events, is one of the most popular destinations on Project Q Atlanta.
