The head of the Human Rights Campaign lands in Atlanta on Thursday to phone bank for Michelle Nunn, the Democrat locked in a tight race for Georgia's open U.S. Senate.
HRC President Chad Griffin will join members of HRC Atlanta for HRC Gets Out the Vote at the Midtown headquarters of the Democratic Party of Georgia. They'll work to motivate LGBT voters to support Nunn, whose stumbling over gay issues has dampened enthusiasm for her campaign.
Griffin's stop in Atlanta is part of a four-state get out the vote effort for a handful of candidates that HRC endorsed. In Georgia, the organization backed Nunn and Jason Carter, the Democrat in a tight race for governor.
“We are at a critical juncture in our fight for full equality,” Griffin said in a statement. “The outcome of this election will impact whether or not we move forward or backward with fair-minded policies and legislation, and that’s why mobilizing LGBT voters and allies to get out and vote for equality-minded candidates is a key priority.”
HRC said Griffin's visit helps highlight critical differences between Nunn and GOP challenger David Perdue. Gay-friendly Libertarian Amanda Swafford is also in the race.
Georgia: Michelle Nunn – With nearly 40,000 HRC members and supporters in Georgia, on Thursday, October 30, Griffin will travel to Atlanta for one of the ongoing phone banks to help elect Michelle Nunn to the U.S. Senate. There are stark differences between Nunn and her opponent David Purdue, and her strong positions on issues of great importance to LGBT Georgians make her the clear choice for equality.
