How to stoke your fire with big ManShaft wood

When it comes to gay archetypes, few in Atlanta embrace and subvert masculinity as well or as often as ManShaft. The quarterly themed dance party returns on Saturday with your invitation to serve Lumbersexual Realness even if that’s not your usual thing.

Whether it’s Levi-Leather, Military, Lumberjacks, or another man-on-man theme, ManShaft guru DJ Diablo Rojo knows his niche and works it for everything it’s worth. His traveling event seems to have found its true niche as well, settling into Heretic for Saturday’s ManShaft: Lumberjack Edition like an old flannel shirt and a tight pair of jeans.

The event kicks off at 9 p.m. with DJ Neon the Glowgobear in the booth. At 11 p.m., Rojo himself takes over to spin the lumberjacks into the wee hours. Rojo gives us a tease in the event video (above) and sets expectations for a good time.

“Expect a hot log jam full of furry chests and faces,” the video promises. “Expect flannels, unions, knit caps, bulging Levis, hot daddies, bears, cubs, otters, wolves. It’s time to get your wood on. Let’s be lovers instead of loggers.”

You know what’s up. And if you don’t, try our Guide to Lumbersexuality, or consult the Field Guide to Gay Fur. Below are some good rules of thumb from our ManShaft Lumberjack archives.

Start with a face-full of beard.

Get your plaid on.

That goes for your woodsy earflaps.

And trucker hats.

And skull caps.

Or a combination thereof.

And don’t forget the suspenders.

Up your longjohns game with a Union suit.

Or mix it up in overalls.

You could create your lumbersexual doppelganger.

Let DJ Diablo Rojo guide you on Saturday at ManShaft.

ManShaft: Lumberjack Edition takes place Saturday, March 14 @ Heretic, 9 p.m. Visit the new ManShaft website, follow the party on Facebook, and e-mail DJ Diablo Rojo to get on the permanent mailing and guest list.
