How this sexy guy builds those bulges and biceps

For gay Atlanta guy Kayin Malik, fitness is a means to an end. He wants to be toned and likes to show off his hard work in the gym. But his end game is much bigger than that.

The 34-year-old Malik, a corporate recruiter for a travel management company by day and erotic novelist by night, wants to be a daddy. Not that kind. The ones with children. And he wants to be an in shape and healthy daddy that can keep up with those kids. So there's his fitness routine.

So we chatted with Malik to get him to share some of his keys to fitness success.

What got you so focused on fitness?

I want children and I want to be an active father. Since time isn’t slowing down and it looks like I’ll be a much older father than anticipated, I want to stay as physically fit and active as possible. I don’t want to have to run behind my child with a walker, nor do I want their friends asking “is that your grandfather?”

The diet: Balance and moderation

It’s a combination of both, but I mostly cook my own meals. You will usually find salmon, chicken or turkey at my table. I will also confess that I’m a cereal junkie but I tend to curb that by eating healthier brands with oat clusters and fruit (look for higher fiber content). I believe in balance – eat what you enjoy but always in moderation.

The workout: Keep it fresh

My goal is to workout at least five times a week and it's usually a combination of cardio and weights. I spend about 10-15 minutes doing cardio each session and then focus on a specific area of the body each workout, such as arms, abs or legs. I also have a great group of friends who are always seeking out new challenges, whether that’s boot camps, extreme obstacles or community awareness activities. So that helps to keep it fresh.

Biggest challenge: A tasty margarita

Eating and drinking! I love good food and a great margarita. And sadly, most of my friends are alcoholics so I'm always surrounded by drinks!

Your motivation: The mirror

I do it to stay healthy and to endure my reflection in the mirror! I have no desire to be a muscle bunny or anything, but I do like to maintain a toned and defined physique. I simply want to remain as healthy as possible. Also, my desire for children keeps me motivated. I plan on being the quintessential soccer dad!

Final fitness thoughts: Fitness with friends (and goals)

Surround yourself with like-minded individuals. It’s easy to stay focused when you have a great support system that holds you accountable. My friends and I post our weekly goals to a shared group we’ve created on Facebook and we provide status updates throughout the week. If we’re slacking, we have a network in each other to offer encouragement and support to push through. It’s pretty awesome!
