Moattar is co-president of Moattar, Ltd., the family luxury rug business that just celebrated its 50th anniversary, and blends his love for the arts and education by advising SCAD Atlanta. His love for fitness? He shares that with his partner of nearly four years. And at 39, he's ever aware of reaching the big 4-0 later this year.
“I am turning 40 in October so my goal is to be in the best shape possible for this milestone birthday,” Moattar says. “My partner of 3.5 years is also into working out and experimenting with different ways of keeping in shape. We play off of each other in that aspect very well.”
What got you so focused on fitness?
I have been into working out since I was 16 years old. My views on keeping in shape have evolved over the years. In my 20s, keeping in shape was just about “hitting the gym.” Now, in my 30s, it encompasses more of an all over athleticism.
The workout: Keeping it core
I tend to try different things for a period of time and then change. I feel like changing it up is extremely important when trying to trick your body and keeping fit! I have been training with my trainer Stephen Smith at VIVA Fitness for almost three years now. He is a great trainer because he really pushes me and is very core oriented. I was kickboxing for about two years and now have started cross-fit at Training Room alongside weight training. I work out at least six times a week and try to warm up with at least 10 minutes of cardio before each session.
Biggest challenge: The big 4-0
I think the hardest part of staying fit is aging and eating. I have always loved exercise, it is a part of my day when I can just tune out everything, listen to my music and get my endorphins going.
The diet: Healthy with a little splurge
Diet is a big part of fitness, but since I am a big foodie that is where I struggle the most. My partner is a great healthy cook so we eat at home once or twice a week. We order out for dinner fairly often, but try to keep it pretty clean and healthy(ish). For instance, we love the “Power Pizza” from Pero's, which is a whole wheat cheese less pizza with spinach, grilled chicken and veggies and just a little feta. It doesn't even taste like a healthy choice. It is amazing. We also eat a lot of sushi, but do not have problems splurging when the time is right — at least once a week.
When cooking at home, we enjoy preparing foods that are as direct from vine to table as possible and focus on incorporating lean proteins, healthy grains like Quinoa, and dark, leafy greens. When selecting food, I try to keep the balance between viewing food as fuel for exercise and activity, and enjoying food as a pleasurable aspect of my daily life.
I love to eat late at night in bed, so I really try to watch my intake. I could eat a full meal right before I went to sleep if I wanted to.
Final fitness thoughts
My philosophy is really to workout hard but also enjoy life. Eating is something I really enjoy so I will never deprive myself. Ever!
