Gay Houston City Council candidate Lane Lewis continues to collect endorsements for his campaign, again snagging support from a law enforcement group.

Lewis announced Wednesday that the Harris County Deputies' Organization endorsed his campaign. It's the second law enforcement group to back Lewis.

“On behalf of the HCDO membership we proudly endorse Lane Lewis for Houston City Council at Large Position 1,” HCDO head Bob Goerlitz said in a press release. “Lane respects the work of law enforcement and works to bring community and law enforcement together to solve crime and safety issues.”

Lewis said the support speaks to his work on several citizen review boards and committees, and his efforts "building bridges" between various constituencies and law enforcement agencies.

“I have the upmost respect for the men and women who serve and protect us,” Lewis said. “I believe our law enforcement agencies and the community benefit most from and open dialogue and the HCDO believe the same. I look forward to building bridges and bringing cops, community, and council together.”

On Monday, the Teamsters Local Union No. 988 also backed Lewis, citing his "proven dedication of serving the people of Houston."

Lewis, chair of the Harris County Democratic Party, faces several candidates in the At-Large District 1 race, including transgender construction consultant Jenifer Rene Pool.
