It was the summer of Brittney – not the singer with one T but the gay Houston native with two. Hang on tight, because you’re about to love this lesbian WNBA All Star, even if you've been living under a sports-free rock.
Brittney Griner’s reign actually goes way beyond this past summer. It’s Griner’s whole year, and we’re just living in it. In a relative flash, the Nimitz High School basketball star has gone from Texas phenom to national treasure. Now everything she touches makes gay Houston proud.
Griner put the LGBT nation on notice in 2013. That’s when the No. 1 draft pick out of Baylor came out as gay matter-of-factly to the roar of lesbian basketball fans. Her star’s rise gained momentum off the court when she stood up to bullies, became a Nike menswear model, wrote a book "In My Skin," and wowed a star-studded gay crowd.
When it comes to basketball, Griner lets her moves do the talking. That includes shattering the WNBA single-season record for blocked shots. Her 129 blocks in 2014 is 15 more than the previous record, but it’s also more blocks than eight WNBA team totals combined. She’s used to it. Her 736 blocked shots during four years at Baylor set an NCAA record for both men and women.
So why is it Griner’s year? Yes, her team the Phoenix Mercury are now the WNBA champions. Yep, she was named the league’s Defensive Player of the Year. And sure, even non-sports fans may have heard about Griner’s very public engagement to another WNBA player. It’s the Summer of Brittney for all those reasons but so many more. Including bacon. Let’s look.
About those blocks….
And those locks.
OK. It’s also about those arms.
And those courtside charms.
That’s Tulsa Shock’s Glory Johnson saying yes.
No wonder she made Advocate's ‘40 under 40.’
ESPN’s sizeable spotlight made the 6’8” center ‘Lifesize’
One of the ‘Nine for IX’ documentaries, the short film follows Griner on a Chinese team in her first off-season in 2013, as well as her journey to self-acceptance and full adulthood. Watch it.
How does she do it? Don’t know. Just does.
Well, there may be a secret weapon.
Brittney gets into it, y'all.
And takes no shit.
Because victory is sweet.
Even sweeter with championship bling.
And supplemental bling.
Goofball antics work for Brittney.
And she kinda knows it.
What would you do if roles were reversed?
But we would totally kick it with her.
Because we like her style.
And her cache.
Also because she’s a gorgeous human.
And face it. Brittney just seems cool.
Though we'll never forget she’s a badass.
