Houston shines on ‘World’s 200 Best Gay Bars’

We love finding and sharing kudos for gay Houston, whether for our allies, our scholars, our colleges, or just our overall gayness. This time, three Houston bars get their due.

You may not agree with every nook and cranny that made Out Traveler’s city-by-city 200 Best Gay Bars in the World, and you may not like some of the omissions. Nevertheless, it’s good to know we’re on the tourist radar that can stock our bars with worldly men.

Out’s take on our fair city’s best options for “where to imbibe, get down, and let loose around the world” includes three spots we all know very well, and all part of a well-known family of bars. See if the mag’s choices and assessments match your own.

METEOR: It's all about banquets, go-go boys and wild dance moves at this warehouse-sized space that proves everything is bigger in Texas.

MONTROSE MINING COMPANY: Rather than the hip factor, this is the down-homey place—wood barrels, floors—to be. You'll probably be more comfortable wearing your leather and Levis, but we're sure everyone is invited to this party. As long as you keep it unpretentious. And don't mind a bit of sweaty back hair near your beer.

SOUTH BEACH: Don't be confused, this Houston club is located in the heart of the city's uber-gay Montrose district and it channels the thump-thump beat you'd expect for a place named after a Miami getaway. Expect packed dance floors and college boys aplenty, and straight guys and gals looking for their own sort of action. [photo]
