When one of gay Houston’s own makes good on the national stage, we’re happy to extol their virtues, but it warms our hearts a little extra when it’s someone who clearly loves Houston, diversity and equality so much. If you haven’t already, meet Christina Canales Gorczynski.
Latina magazine just named the local lesbian lawyer, First Person consultant and CEO, and outspoken LGBT advocate for its Inspiring Latina honor, and it’s easy to see why. Canales Gorczynski takes her status as a member of multiple communities seriously, which of course makes her a natural for the national honor.
“I think people should be able to participate in their communities to the fullest extent. Houston [is] this incredibly diverse, beautifully international city, and no one should be limited [here] in their aspiration. That is a value that is American, Texan and Houstonian.”
You may recognize her as the campaign director for the “Texas Wins” campaign for LGBT equality. A Who's Who of gay Houston also regularly tweets her praises. Or you may simply recognize her maiden name.
Both of Canales-Gorczynski’s parents have served on Houston City Council. She says that she was inspired by them and other members of her family to fight for equality.
She does it not just for herself but for others who may not have the resources to fend for themselves – and she wants to pass on the inspiration, too.
“Being open and authentic about who you [are] can be one of the most revolutionary things you can do.”
Well said and viva la revolucion, Christina. May we all take a little of that spark of inspiration with us, and put your name down on the list right next to other gay Houstonians making a national mark.
