The gay volleyball circuit stops in Atlanta on Friday for the Hotlanta Classic XVII, the annual event from the Hotlanta Volleyball Association. Some 20 teams and 160 gay tennis players will spike the weekend away on the courts of Emory University.

“It’s about the experience of a new city and with different people and making friends,” says Duc Nguyen, the tournament director. “Of course, you get some competitive volleyball play, which is nice.”

Events start Friday at 7 p.m. when participants gather for a registration party. Matches start Saturday and Sunday at 8 a.m. There’s also an event Saturday evening and a post-tournament celebration Sunday. The events are free and open to the public.

For more on the tournament, read my recent Southern Voice sports column. For a detailed schedule, check HVA’s web site for the event.
