Yeah, the high price of movie tickets sucks and there’s that swine flu making the rounds. But man up because there’s a must-see movie each week this month and most of them feature some serious studflesh.
May 1: “X-Men Origins: Wolverine”
Geek-fest sequel, part one. Sexiest Man Alive Hugh Jackman reprises his role as Wolverine (photo) in this prequel to the X-Men trilogy that made Jackman a household name. Liev Schreiber beefed up for his role as Wolvie’s archenemy Sabretooth, studly Ryan Reynolds is the wise-ass assassin Deadpool and Taylor Kitsch (bad-boy football star from NBC’s “Friday Night Lights”) hits the big screen as Cajun mutant Gambit.
Dominic Monaghan (from “Lost”) and will.i.am (yes, that will.i.am from the Black-eyed Peas) round out a cast packed with super powers and good looks.
What if “Wolverine” is all sold out when you hit the multiplex? Check out “Ghosts of Girlfriends Past” with the sexy Matthew McConaughey and adorable Jennifer Garner.
May 8: “Star Trek”
Geek-fest sequel, part two. Get ready for a rollercoaster ride through J.J. Abrams’ history of the most famous crew to fly the U.S.S. Enterprise. The handsome Chris Pine (photo) is James T. Kirk before he was a captain, sexy Zachary Quinto eerily hits the mark in his portrayal of Mr. Spock, beefy Eric Bana is a bad-ass Romulan bent on galactic destruction and domination, and the gorgeous Zoe Saldana embodies the graceful and sexy Lt. Uhura.
Early reports indicate there are plenty of winks and nods in the film to “Star Trek” mythology (and outright inside Trekkie jokes) to go along with the action and special effects, not to mention a cameo appearance by Leonard Nimoy.
It may be illogical to need two back-up movies in case “Star Trek” is sold out. But just in case, check out gay action (and plenty of artistic drama) in “Little Ashes” starring Robert Pattinson as Salvador Dalí and Javier Beltrán as Frederico García Lorca. If you’re still worked up from 2001’s “Y Tu Mamá También,” you’ll be glad to know “Rudo y Cursi” reunites Gael García Bernal and Diego Luna. But, alas, this time they aren’t lovers, only soccer buds. Yeah, that’s hot, too.
May 15: “Angels and Demons”
Geek-fest sequel, part three. Tom Hanks and Ewan McGregor star in the film adaptation of Larry Brown’s novel, which was a prequel to “The DaVinci Code,” but has been reworked as a sequel for the film.
May 21: “Terminator Salvation”
Geek-fest sequel, part four. The fourth film in the “Terminator” franchise finds the delicious Christian Bale (photo) as an adult John Connor living in a post-apocalyptic warzone, kicking some serious machine ass.
May 22: “Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian”
Not a geek-fest sequel, but Ben Stiller is back for the sequel to 2006’s “Night at the Museum,” set in the Smithsonian this time. Amy Adams is Amelia Earhart come to life from one of the displays and Hank Azaria stars as a villainous Egyptian pharaoh.
May 29: “Up”
The latest opus from Disney-Pixar involves an old man (voiced by Ed Asner) who wants to retire to South America, so he ties a ton of helium-filled balloons to his house and floats away. A little boy accidentally stows away and hi-jinks ensue. Yeah, it doesn’t sound too amazing, but then neither did a story about a fish looking for his son. Look how “Finding Nemo” turned out.
