HERO supporters rally, hit the streets for support

HERO supporters rallied on Saturday morning before they hit the streets and canvassed for voters to back the city's embattled LGBT-inclusive non-discrimination ordinance.

Many people dressed in the bright red HERO t-shirts that have become the symbol of backers of the Houston Equal Rights Ordinance. Resurrection MCC hosted the rally from Houston Unites, which is spearheading efforts to win the Nov. 3 public vote and keep the ordinance in place. The group has raised more cash than opponents and a recent poll shows that voters favor HERO 43 percent to 37 percent who oppose it, according to the Houston Chronicle.

The HERO rally came just two days ahead of the start of early voting, which opened on Monday. The event attracted at least two political candidates – mayoral hopeful Chris Bell, who has spoken out strongly of HERO, and Jenifer Renee Poole, a trans candidate running for the City Council At-Large 1 position.

Late Saturday, supporters danced the night away at the Super HERO Party at South Beach.
