Hawks ‘Livin’ la Vida Loca’

The last time this happened, Ricky Martin (right) was topping the charts with “Livin’ la Vida Loca.”

The year was 1999 and it marked the last time the Atlanta Hawks made the post-season. Until now. The up-and-down Hawks will face the Boston Celtics in the first round of the playoffs, ending the NBA’s longest post-season drought by capturing the eighth and final slot in the Eastern Conference.

It’s tough to see how the Hawks, powered in part by rookie sensation Al Horford (top photo), will overcome the Celtics in the series. But for now, it’s just for us to enjoy the thought of combining “Atlanta Hawks” and “playoffs” in the same sentence. But first it’s Miami tonight for the regular season closer.

Consider what else was taking place in 1999: Lance Armstrong wins the first of seven consecutive Tour de France titles, the Falcons lose in the Super Bowl (yes, that’s correct), and the U.S. Senate acquits President Bill Clinton in his impeachment trial.

In the mix of all of this, Horford continues his battle with Seattle’s Kevin Durant for Rookie of the Year honors.
