Some 40 women, mostly lesbians, filled Suburban Lanes on North Decatur Road tonight for the kick-off of the newest offering from the Decatur Women’s Sports League – bowling. The league opened with 10 teams, well above founder Anne Barr’s expectations, with names including Gutter Girls, Ebony & Ivory, Here for the Beer and Bowl Daggers.
“With such short notice, I didn’t know what to expect,” Barr says. “For the beginning of the league, it’s a good start.”
The 10-week bowling league grew out of the success of the softball league that Barr started last March. Both sports, along with a new basketball league, also raise money for the Atlanta Lesbian Health Initiative. The softball league donated about $4,200 to ALHI to help fund physicals for women with little or no insurance.
Bowling continues on Wednesdays at 6:30 p.m. Barr says that although the teams are filled, additional participants are invited to sign up as substitutes to step in when there’s an opening. The basketball league tips-off on Thursday at 7 p.m. inside the Decatur High School gym.
