Golf tourney scrambles to new records

A record number of participants in an annual golf tournament helped raise an estimated $4,000 for the Atlanta Feminist Women’s Chorus, a non-profit organization that has canceled concerts, laid off the creative staff and canceled rehearsals over financial struggles.

The 5th Annual Best Ball Scramble Golf Tournament, held June 7, turned out to be the biggest and best yet, according to organizer Eileen Stone, an AFWC member since 1992.

“It was very gratifying,” Stone says. “This event is very important to the chorus. We have bills to pay off. It’s been a very emotional few months for the chorus.”

The event this year raised about $1,000 more than in 2007, in part due to a record-high 76 participants, improved items for the tournament’s raffle and selling mulligans for $5, she says.

What the tournament couldn’t do this year, though, is beat Mother Nature. Stone opted to move the event earlier in June and away from the Atlanta Pride festivities once that festival changed to the July 4th holiday. She hoped the earlier date would provide a reprieve from the searing summer heat. Turns out, last weekend marked the hottest days of the year so far, with temperatures in the mid to high 90s.

“I knew it was going to be hot and reminded everyone to drink. You have to have a sense of humor when it is in the 90s. Fortunately, no one came off the course cranky,” she says.
