Recapping the year in local gay sports in my Southern Voice sports column this week turned into an enjoyable walk down memory lane. Atlanta enjoys a vibrant gay sports scene and week after week of writing the column shows that. When it’s time to go for the gold – yes, it’s an old sports cliché but it works – teams in this city can stand up to the test of national, even international, competition.

The Hotlanta Softball League and the Atlanta Rainbow Trout led the local pack in capturing titles in 2007. The Hotlanta Soccer Association and the National Flag Football League of Atlanta made title runs, too, but fell short of their expectations. Meanwhile, some local teams opted to bring the competition to Atlanta, hosting tournaments that attracted gay and lesbian athletes from around the U.S. The thrill of competition made for some interesting times.
