How to give your gay home a dose of design pop

Dekton, honey. It's the latest thing to chic up that gay home and it makes more of a statement than those deer heads above your bed. Gay designer Mark Williams brings it to Atlanta and dishes out some additional design tips to help.

Principal at Mark Williams Design Associates, this Georgia Tech grad knows his stylish, chic and innovative. He's done commercial. Multi-family dwellings and single-family, too. So he knows his way around some gay homes. On Tuesday, he unveils the latest product from his partnership with Poggenpohl and Cosentino. It's Dekton. All the way from production facilities in Spain.

“The material itself is pretty revolutionary,” Williams (photo) says. “It's extraordinarily thin, comes in enormous contiguous sheets, and yet is versatile enough to clad virtually any surface from counter tops to floors and walls both interior and exterior.”

Versatile. And chic. Now that will impress stylish friends at your next cocktail party.

But before Dekton's southeastern launch, which comes during Modern Atlanta's Design Is Human Week, we caught up with Williams and asked him to offer some practical design tips on how to spruce up your gay home. Not everyone has the talent to turn a historic library into a fabulous home. So he helped with this advice.

Condense your clutter.

“We all have lots of stuff in our lives and consequently all over our homes. If you can find one place to keep all of the little things that clutter up our living spaces, your home will feel larger and more peaceful. Take all photos of family and friends and cluster them on one wall. Keep all books and saved magazines in one place. Have one location for cell phones, wallets, and keys, preferably near the door you use most to come and go.”

Simplify your paint palette.

“Pick a foundation neutral that you can utilize all over your home, then pick rooms to highlight with a complimentary color or perhaps a darker richer neutral to make a space feel more intimate or moody. Painted walls are the backdrop for the rest of your décor, they don’t have to be the star of the show. Once the backdrop has been simplified, you can be more bold with art, accessories, and occasional pillows. These smaller things are easy to change when you want to give a room a quick makeover.”

Look at the lighting in your home.

“Sometimes a room can feel much better when it is lit appropriately. People generally pick out light fixtures based on what the fixture looks like. While the aesthetics of the fixture are important, you also need to consider how much light the fixture will provide based on what kind of light bulb it takes, and what surfaces will be lit by the light given off by the fixture. Also, installing dimmers to lower light levels in the evening can make a home feel more inviting and hospitable. Simply by balancing the lighting, a good space and become a great space.”

Designer Mark Williams joins Poggenpohl and Cosentino during a reception on Tuesday, June 4 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. for the southeastern launch of Dekton.
