If dreams that you dare to dream really do come true, then Barnsley Gardens’ Fairy Godmother is the person who makes it happen. She and the gay-friendly resort’s entire staff let you to dream big then proceed to surpass your expectations.
“It’s the best job in the whole world,” says Fairy Godmother, also known as but rarely called Denise Webb (top photo).
“I enhance the guests’ stay,” she says. “I set the scene for romance. I attend to every little detail.”
For one gay Atlanta couple, that meant that on one visit, while they were out enjoying the vast grounds of the village resort in Adairsville (second photo), Fairy Godmother was rearranging furniture, strewing rose petals, drawing a bath and leaving little surprises all over their room.
The first time Dirk Brown brought his partner Tim Burns to Barnsley Gardens Resort last winter, he was blown away.
“The whole experience is beyond unbelievable,” Brown says. “I just mentioned that it was my partner’s birthday and that he likes ghost stories. Within 20 minutes, I got a call to set up a surprise.”
Fireside dining and a birthday bouquet, followed by a visit from Fairy with ghost stories, were waiting in their room. And the warm, accepting atmosphere doesn’t just come from Fairy Godmother, Brown says.
“It’s like they think of your needs before you realize what they are,” Brown says. “No matter where you are, they know who you are, where you are, what you’re doing and anticipate what you might want or need.”
In addition to 37 cottages (third photo), a main house and 87 rooms (bottom photo) to choose from, guests can take advantage of a spa, gardens, golfing, kayaking, horseback riding, swimming in the Grecian pool, or wandering through paths in the forest with hammocks for two along the way.
Maybe you want a chauffered ride to the historic ruins on the grounds or just to share a glass of wine under the stars. But come on, let your mind wonder and think bigger.
Does your Hawaiian fantasy include coconuts, rum-runner drinks, leis on the bed and grass skirts around the European tub? Want an African adventure package or a “See with Your Hands” romance package? Fairy can do that, and she might just do it in a themed costume.
“I fall desperately in love with everyone,” Fairy coos. “If you can think of it, I want to make it happen. Wishes do come true here.”
Beyond fantasy is the reality of the gorgeous surroundings and special care of Barnsley’s guests. Brown says that it’s like “coming home.”
“It’s that warm, friendly, Southern, give-me-a-hug way of treating guests,” he says. “Its charm is very genuine. That’s where they go so far above and beyond on everything.”
“They remember us when we get there, and when we leave, they’re all standing there waving goodbye,” he adds. “It’s the most amazing place I’ve ever stayed. I’ve traveled a lot for work and stayed a lot of places, and I’ve never had an experience like this.”
And being a same-sex couple at a resort has never been so comfortable either, he assures.
“It’s very romantic—very romantic,” Brown says. “We were hand-holding from one place to another, and I was always treated like any other person. They didn’t think anything or even flinch when I first mentioned my partner. It seemed so normal that I didn’t even think about it.
“Some of us think that Outside the Perimeter is a wasteland for our community, but these people genuinely express care about your well being and your comfort no matter who you are,” he adds.
The only thing that stumps Brown is choosing his favorite part. Ultimately, it’s that this getaway is not far away.
“What I always come back to is that I’m completely pampered, and all I have to do is get in a car and in an hour and 15 minutes, I’m there,” he says. “It’s just outside Atlanta and feels like a million miles away.”
