Dozens of Atlanta’s gay veterans toasted the first anniversary of ending the military’s “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” policy on Saturday and welcomed some of Georgia’s active-duty gay and lesbian troops to join the celebration.

Local members of Servicemembers Legal Defense Network, which works to help LGBT troops toward full equality, hosted the celebration at the home of Jeff Cleghorn (top photo, center), a gay veteran and Atlanta lawyer who fought DADT for years. The Georgia chapter of OutServe, the group for openly gay soldiers and military staffers, served as guests of honor.

The Georgia branch of American Veterans for Equal Rights was also represented at the event. That group hosted Atlanta’s first commemoration of DADT repeal when it happened last year. Cleghorn has received HRC Atlanta’s Humanitarian Award for his work on the issue, and he and Atlanta’s own AVER President Danny Ingram were present when President Obama signed DADT repeal into law.
