Texas native Michael Sam, the gay jock struggling to find an NFL team, is headed home on Wednesday to nail a slot on the practice squad of the Dallas Cowboys.
Drafted then dumped by the Rams, Sam's prospects to become the NFL's first openly gay player dwindled over the weekend. But on Tuesday, NFL watchers reported that the Galveston native was headed to Dallas on Wednesday.

Sam's signing with the Cowboys could make a big splash in Texas, according to Outsports.
Culturally, this signing would be an earthquake. Texas is held up by the gay community as this country's great bastion of homophobia. For the revered Cowboys to bring him in and sign him would send a very clear message that yes, at the end of the day, the NFL is a true meritocracy. If the Cowboys make the move, this is the second team in the Bible Belt to sign Sam.
UPDATE | It's a done deal. Welcome to the Cowboys, Michael Sam.
