Gay Fulton judge launches re-election campaign

One of the few openly gay judges in Georgia, Fulton State Court Judge Jane Morrison, kicked off her re-election campaign on Wednesday, asking LGBT supporters to help return her to the bench for a second term.

Morrison (photo right) chatted up the crowd during a reception at Henry's in Midtown. Among the attendees was her longtime partner, Joan Garner (photo left), who is also running for re-election. Garner became the first openly gay Fulton County Commissioner when she took office in 2011.

Morrison, with endorsements from Georgia Equality and Atlanta Stonewall Democrats, easily won the judgeship in 2012. With a day left in qualifying, she's yet to face an opponent in the race, which will be decided on May 24.

Morrison, a longtime attorney, was appointed as a solicitor in Sandy Springs in 2011 after serving as a part-time judge in Atlanta's Municipal Court and Fulton County Magistrate Court. She also played a role in organizing the Stonewall Bar Association of Georgia and served as its second president in 1996-97. The group honored her at its 2013 dinner.

Last June, when the U.S. Supreme Court legalized gay marriage, Morrison was among the Fulton judges who married the first LGBT couples in the state.
