Gay couple robbed in Old Fourth Ward apartment

image A lesbian couple was robbed early Thursday in their Old Fourth Ward apartment as their two children watched, an incident that came just eight hours after a man was murdered in the same building. Taria Camerino says she heard someone smash the window of her son’s bedroom about 6:15 a.m. on Thursday and quickly gathered her partner, Ashley Hinson, and children and locked their door to the bedroom. Camerino and Hinson tried to block the door, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, but the assailant pushed through, demanded money and threatened to kill them.

“We just moved in so we were painting and we were all sleeping in the front bedroom, so no one was in there,” Camerino said. “I called the police as soon as I heard the smashing.” She said that she closed and locked the door to the bedroom where she, her children and her partner were, “and my partner and I sat in front of the door to block it if he was busting in.” She said she stayed on the phone with 911 operators, talking at a whisper. “He busted through the door and pushed us out of the way, and he just started asking for money and whatever we had,” Camerino said. “My only thought was to put myself between him and the children,” she said, tearing up as she recounted the experience.
Camerino owns Sugar Coated Radical, a candy store in the same two-story building at the corner of Irwin and Howell streets in the Old Fourth Ward neighborhood. So she convinced the robber to follow her downstairs to the store where she kept money -- and to keep him away from her children.
“He made me empty out the till, and made me stay under a table until the cops came,” Camerino said, adding that the robber got away with $400.
Just hours earlier, about 10 p.m. on Wednesday, Suhrid Das was shot and killed as he closed Banna Grocery in the same building. Camerino described the incident Thursday morning on her store's Facebook page:
