Lil Nas X broke new barriers by becoming the first openly gay rapper nominated in the Grammys’ major categories and the first openly gay black artist to win a Country Music Association award.

The Atlanta rapper (photo) took home the CMA for Musical Event of the Year on Nov. 13 for “Old Town Road,” his record-breaking collaboration with Billy Ray Cyrus, according to the L.A. Times. Lil Nas X celebrated the win on Twitter.

Lil Nas X earned six Grammy nominations just one week later, including Best New Artist, Record of the Year and Album of the Year. He also received nods for Best Pop Duo/Group Performance, Best Music Video and Best Rap/Sung Performance, according to the L.A. Times.

Lil Nas X also picked up an honor from Smithsonian magazine, which gave him an American Ingenuity Award for Youth on Nov. 19, according to the Washington Blade. He was one of just seven honorees to receive an American Ingenuity Award this year.

And keeping his November winning streak going, Lil Nas X took home his first American Music Award on Sunday. He won the Favorite Song – Rap/Hip-Hop award for “Old Town Road,” according to Billboard. The rapper, who wore a lime green suit with matching platform heels to the ceremony (see below), told Billboard to expect “amazing surprises” from him in 2020.

Lil Nas X came out on the final day of Stonewall Month in June. He told Time magazine in August that he was inspired to come out after seeing Pride flags everywhere and seeing same-sex couples holding hands.

“Old Town Road” spent a record-breaking 19 weeks at the top of the Billboard Hot 100 chart before being dethroned by Billie Eilish’s “Bad Guy.”
