Gay ATL couple’s Facebook fight ends in jail

Facebook offers 11 ways to describe your relationship. But for this gay Atlanta couple, "It's complicated" doesn't quite grasp the nuances. Or hint at the jail time that resulted over a post on the social network.

For the last two years, the men – one is 43, the other 46 – have been in a relationship. Often, the younger shacks up at the older one's upscale apartment in the Old Fourth Ward. On a Monday afternoon in early February, things turned sour – quickly – and ended in a two-night stay for both in the Fulton County Jail.

Let's unpack what happened.

The older man came across "information" that his boyfriend posted on Facebook. Sadly, an incident report from Atlanta police doesn't detail exactly what he meant by "information." Who needs details, right? But the content of the post is critical. Was it a change in their relationship status? Flirting with another guy? Messaging the ex? Critiquing his sense of fashion? A repost of one of those annoying photo memes?

Whatever it was, the "information" infuriated the boyfriend. So much so that he confronted his partner, who in turn "became very aggressive." On this point, the incident report offers details.

"[The older man] stated [his boyfriend] hit him in the face with a closed fist and that's when the physical altercation started."

But how the verbal disagreement over the Facebook "information" turned into a physical kerfuffle is up to interpretation. Younger dude says "solid objects" were thrown and that led to the fight between the feisty lovers.

These guys, though, are tough. Or sorry fighters. Police found no bruises and the boyfriends both declined medical treatment. So then, both to jail on simple battery charges and time way from Facebook. At least until they bonded out two days later.
