The Atlanta Bucks Rugby Football Club opens its 10-game winter season on Saturday with a match against the straight jocks of the High County Rugby Football Club. Game time is 1 p.m. at Sammye Coan Middle School in Kirkwood.

The Bucks warmed up on Jan. 5 with “Rugby 101,” a three-hour training session held each season as a recruiting and training tool for new members. The club wants to improve on its 1-4-1 record from the fall campaign and the schedule includes a home and away series with the gay Nashville Grizzlies. The teams face each other Feb. 23 in Nashville and March 29 in Atlanta.

The Bucks also has its sites set on the Rugby World Cup in Dublin this June, looking to better a sixth-place finish in 2006 during the last international competition. The event, more formally known as the Bingham Cup, is the signature competition of the International Gay Rugby Association & Board.

Between matches, the Bucks practice Tuesdays and Thursdays at Grayson Field in East Point. The two-hour practices start at 7:30 p.m.
