Take a breath, Rev. Tony Byrd. Your minutes-long rant before Georgia lawmakers was so quick and breathless that we almost missed your inclusion of gay marriage among the evils facing America.
Tanya Ditty, move over. Byrd managed to trample the gays while also knocking down abortionists, pornographers, pot smokers, rapists and robbers. Your tirade was before just a small subcommittee. Byrd got the attention of the whole House.
It’s a pretty grim fate for America, what with all of the godlessness running rampant that Byrd worries about. His appearance before the state House came on Feb. 23 at the invitation – yes, someone asked him to deliver this screed – from Rep. Michael Harden. It’s best described as “shouty” by Creative Loafing. We trimmed the 12-minute clip to hit just the anti-gay highlights. If you’re felling particularly self-loathing, watch Byrd uncut.
And while you do, consider that this anti-wingnut spoke from the House floor just days before lawmakers rejected a resolution commending a gay group at UGA. Four days after Byrd’s pastoral love, a House subcommittee quashed legislation that would protect the state’s LGBT employees from on-the-job bias.
