Fulton health chief quits as HIV scandal lingers

The embattled Fulton health director who resigned after refusing federal help to clean up an HIV funding scandal is leaving her post, months ahead of her planned December departure.

Earlier this year, WABE chronicled how the county heath department lost $9 million in funding for HIV programs in Fulton and DeKalb counties. And when problems surfaced, Dr. Patrice Harris rejected offers of help from federal health officials.

Harris reacted to the reports, and criticism from Fulton commissioners, by announcing her retirement in August, effective in December. But that timetable has now been pushed up to Wednesday.

Via WABE:

Harris said she resigned to devote more time to her positions as chair-elect of the American Medical Association and not because of the recent controversy surrounding her leadership.

That sounds as believable as it did in August when she first announced she was quitting.
