Francoeur’s mug takes a beating

Even with his new pre-season puffiness, Jeff Francoeur’s face couldn’t weather a nasty smack from an errant pitch during a game on Sunday.

The 24-year-old slugger suffered only cuts inside his mouth and his lips, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. But the hit put a scare in Francoeur and Braves fans who know he has a titanium plate in his face from a beaning in 2004 that struck him in the eye, fracturing the orbital bone and causing other damage to the eye socket.

The Braves say the right fielder will sit a few games to recover.

There’s been much speculation about Francoeur, who reported to Spring Training with 17 new pounds attached to his frame. David O’Brien, the AJC’s Braves beat writer, continues to insist that Francoeur added 17 pounds of muscle in the off-season despite a marriage and honeymoon in Mexico and photos that suggest the young star put on more than just muscle. Seriously, how much muscle can someone pack on in the three or so months since the end of the 2007 season and the start of Spring Training?

That’s a lot of time in the gym, if it’s even possible for someone who honeymooned and helped the new wife settled into their Gwinnett home. it’s ok, though, as even a husky Frenchy still has his appeal. A cub in the making?
