With the Order of the Flaming Sugarbaker Sisters as hosts, you know Saturday’s Community Health & Safety Fair was not your typical gathering of LGBT health resources.
The troupe of performers and do-gooders (second and bottom photos with guests) descended on Amsterdam Atlanta on Saturday afternoon with a lively posse in tow. They not only highlighted local LGBT health resource groups, but did so with their own unconventional flair.
Sure, like other health fairs, the event welcomed a mass of health-focused nonprofits with information on their services. Atlanta Lesbian Health Initiative, Positive Impact’s M.I.S.T.E.R. Center, AID Atlanta, and the Emory Hope Clinic, to name a few, were part of the mix.
But the comparisons to traditional health fairs stop there. For a complete idea, add cocktails, therapeutic massages and fully painted Sisters that made up a full-on carnival atmosphere.
The guest list also included the Queer Justice League of Atlanta, Georgia Equality, Lambda Legal, and the Atlanta Police Department’s LGBT liaisons Officers Brian Sharp and Patricia Powell (third photo, left and center) in a fun, getting-to-know-you environment.
The whole affair was the brainchild of Novice Sister Prissy Go-Lightly, who wanted to offer opportunities to meet local organizations in a social setting where guests could network as well. From the looks of our photo album, that goal was met and then exceeded.
