Q100’s “The Bert Show” personality Melissa Carter is hard to resist, and she’s even easier to love when she combines a few of our favorite things Wednesday at a benefit for the Melissa Carter Transplant Fund.
The Wednesday event invites you to hit Amsterdam Walk with Carter for jewelry shopping, chocolate tasting, cocktails and music to raise money and awareness about organ donation. The event begins at Worthmore Jewelers with an afterparty at Bellissima Lounge.
In 2007, Piedmont Hospital started the fund in Carter’s name to honor her life-saving kidney transplant there, which she went through publicly in 2002. Already a notable, beloved part of Atlanta’s out LGBT community, Carter won our hearts and support forever when she chose to “come out” about her ordeal as a platform to put a friendly face on the cause.
“Nearly 6,000 people die annually–or 18 people each day–awaiting an organ transplant,” she writes on her blog. “I was fortunately not part of that statistic… my cousin Pam made the ultimate selfless act of donating her kidney.”
Carter regularly appears on behalf of LGBT rights and causes — including the Atlanta Human Rights Campaign Gala Dinner earlier this month (bottom photo) — but clearly this one is personal. Money raised at the diamond and bon-bon filled Melissa Carter Transplant Fund benefit on Wednesday is distributed directly to transplant candidates and transplant nurses at Piedmont Hospital.
“Piedmont Hospital saved my life, and my hope is that the Fund will be something that outlives me,” Carter writes. “I also hope it continues to grow and offers many others the chance at a longer life–and help impact the 2,000 people who are currently on the waiting list in Georgia.”
