Anne Fauver, a lesbian and two-term Atlanta City Council member for District 6, has picked up at least one challenger for the 2009 election.

Charlie Stadtlander (photo), a gay school teacher and former member of the Log Cabin Republicans, says the city’s current financial crisis is prompting him to step into the race. Stadtlander has most recently worked with the Purple Party, an effort aimed at fostering community between gay Republicans, Democrats and allies while raising money for the Human Rights Campaign.

“Although I’ve been here two years, I moved here after college,” Stadtlander said. “I’ve fallen in love with Atlanta and I’ve watched under Anne Fauver’s tenure our city has fallen into a financial crisis.”

Stadtlander’s campaign website includes an extensive campaign team featuring many who are well-known in gay Atlanta. Among them are Frances Ann Moran and Ebonee Bradford, campaign co-chairs; Jamie Ensley, treasurer; Woodrow Leake, youth services advisor; and Tracy Elliott, health and wellness policy advisor.

Despite his work with Log Cabin, Stadlander donated $260 to the presidential campaign of Hillary Clinton.

Fauver may have a second opponent in her effort to capture a third term representing the heavily gay Midtown district. Steve Brodie, a gay man who lost to Fauver in 2005 by a handful of votes, is considering running again.

“Even if I don’t get in it, at least it will liven things up,” Brodie said. “As far as where I’m going to be, I’m going to be seeing where things are after the next month.”

Brodie said there several personal and professional issues he must consider before running for District 6 again.
