Falcons consider quarterback options

The Atlanta Falcons ended their three-day mini-camp on Wednesday without imploding. That’s a nice change from last season, when everything the team touched seemed to go bad.

The Falcons opted to put nearly 70 veterans through the mini-camp ahead of the April 26-27 draft to get a better feel for how they will use their 11 picks. Key among the questions explored was what to do with the quarterback slot.

The team has a trio of choices – Joey Harrington (top photo), Chris Redman and D.J. Shockley – though none of them stand out as the starter. So much for life in the post-Michael Vick era. How the Falcons rate their QB options is a big factor in whether the team will use its No. 3 overall pick to snatch Boston College’s Matt Ryan (right photo).

Picking up Ryan seems probable, as Harrington is signed to a one-year deal, Shockley is recovering from a knee injury and Redman is unproven. Ryan may or may not help, but at least he’ll add more depth to the eye candy quotient.

The Falcons lost their best QB option to Fort Leavenworth, Kan., but what they’ve got left – Harrington, Redman and Shockley (bottom photo, left to right) – gives the team one of the best looking quarterback line-ups in the league. They may not be making much of an impact on the field, but they sure are nice to look at.

The Falcons this week released their schedule for the upcoming season, which starts at home against Detroit on Sept. 7. See the full schedule here.
