When gay part-time Atlanta resident Elton John speaks, people tend to take cover. He is, after all, known to rant at reporters and spew venom at those who question him.
But the singer, who arrives in town Saturday with Billy Joel for a sold out performance at Philips Arena, will join bioscience experts here in May.
Yes, John will deliver a keynote address at the BIO International Convention in May. He’s expected to speak about how biotechnology affects prevention and treatment of HIV/AIDS and future challenges related to the disease.
“For many years, we have been deeply impressed by Sir Elton John’s longstanding commitment to the fight against AIDS and his efforts to raise money for HIV/AIDS charitable organizations,” said James Greenwood, president of BIO. “We share a common vision when it comes to solving some of the world’s most challenging health problems, like HIV/AIDS.”
BIO represents more than 1,200 biotech companies, academic institutions, state biotechnology centers and related organizations. John established the nonprofit Elton John AIDS Foundation in Atlanta in 1992. It supports prevention programs, care and support services for people living with HIV/AIDS, and efforts to eliminate stigma and discrimination associated with the disease.
