Elton John speaks for Jesus on gay marriage

It’s not that he’s old enough to have known the Christian messiah personally. It’s because he’s expert in inserting himself into current events that Elton John feels sure that Jesus would be down with marriage equality.

Jesus would have totally backed same-sex marriage rights, even for gay priests, the expert media manipulator (photo) tells Sky News.

Sir Elton agreed that gay clergy should be allowed to get married and suggested that the celibacy vow for Catholic priests be abolished.

“These are old and stupid things. If Jesus Christ was alive today, I cannot see him, as the Christian person that he was and the great person that he was, saying this could not happen.”

John, who with David Furnish has two children, says Jesus would have supported marriage between people of the same gender.

“He was all about love and compassion and forgiveness and trying to bring people together and that is what the church should be about,” he said.

John knows how to grab a headline. His comments came in an interview in which he also espoused his views on buzzworthy topics like Pope Francis, a planned tete-a-tete with Vladimir Putin, and Olympics funding. Ever the controversy stirrer, he's planning to play gay-hating Russia (again) and meeting with hater-in-chief Putin while he's there.

We appreciate all the gay good John does in Atlanta and elsewhere. We're just saying that he’s awfully transparent courting controversy by going against the flow in newsworthy quips every single time he gets a soapbox. Like when he called Madonna a “fairground stripper” during her tour or when he squared off with Cher over playing Russia last year.

Hey, we understand, Elton. Promotion via headlines works. After all, even some gay people still believe you’re actually “friends with Eminem” and weren't just stealing his spotlight.

Coverage in the Atlanta Journal Constitution provides perhaps the best response yet to John’s latest diatribe.

While Biblical scholars can debate Elton John's statement, the Book of John clearly illustrates that Jesus would be the best wedding reception guest ever, regardless of who is tying the knot. That's where Jesus performs his first miracle – at the wedding of Cana.

That's the one in which he turns water into wine. Can we get an amen for partying with Jesus?
