Four men sought the title of Mr. Atlanta Eagle on Saturday, baring their best leather and jockstraps, and offering their sexiest fantasy for a cadre of judges who had to parse which one dominated the others.
Wayne Turpin (second photo, left) took the crown for 2011, replacing Chandler Bearden (second photo, right), who was on hand as one of the judges along with Mr. Atlanta Eagle 2009, Alan Pedrod. The annual event before a packed crowd at the Eagle came during the second annual Atlanta Leather Pride, a weekend of events that celebrates both the anniversary of the Midtown bar – which marked its 24th – and leather and BDSM aficionados.
Turpin competed for the crown with Doug Weaver (top photo left), who placed first runner-up, Robert Jenkins (top photo second from right) and Master Du-Wayne (top photo right). Along with Bearden and Penrod, judges for Mr. Atlanta Eagle included Mr. International Bootblack Tim Starkey; Atlanta’s own Mr. SE Rubber G-man, who went on to bring home the Mr. International Rubber title; and Ms. Khiki, the first Ms. Atlanta Eagle in 1995. The special guest emcee was Dakota, the current Ms. American Leatherwoman.
Atlanta Leather Pride also included the Black & Blue Ball (view photos), a cookout and a brunch. The weekend helped raised more than $2,600 for two non-profits -- some $1,250 for the Leather Archives & Museum and $1,414 to the Atlanta Lesbian Health Initiative.
“It opened my eyes to what goes on behind the scenes, the organization that goes into it, the educational aspect,” Bearden told Project Q Atlanta ahead of the event. “It gave me much more of a connection with the community and how much we all help each other. I had connection with individuals before, but now I have connections nationwide. I’ve definitely grown from it.”
