Dreaming of a new mascot

Updated | May 1 | 10:34 a.m. The Atlanta Dream provided a sneak peek at their new mascot and later revealed Star during a press event at Zoo Atlanta on Wednesday.

The furry and friendly-looking gray creature comes as the Dream, the WNBA’s newest team, prepares for its first preseason game. The Los Angeles Sparks are in town for the game at Philips Arena on Saturday.

The start of all-things Dream comes at a peculiar time. The team shares the arena with the Atlanta Hawks, who are in the post-season for the first time in nine years. With the Hawks extending the first-round series with the Boston Celtics to at least six games, local media outlets are focused on the series and not the Dream, who must work their practice schedule around them. No one really expected the NBA season in Atlanta to continue into May.

(It does raise the question, though, of why the Atlanta Journal-Constitution hasn’t added an Atlanta Dream section to its web site. Every other pro team in Atlanta gets that courtesy. Take a look for yourself.)

No worries, though. Soon it will be the Dream’s time to shine. The season opens on May 17 in Connecticut with the home opener set for May 23.

The Dream’s already off to a good start – the new mascot is certainly cuter than Harry the Hawk and Skyhawk, the two mascots of the Hawks. More than 100 children entered a contest to name the new mascot, with Dazzle, Dash, Dreamer and Star as the four finalists. Season ticket holders selected the winner.
