Fielding an expansion team is tough. The Atlanta Dream knew that going into the new WNBA season. But ask them during the preseason if a seat at the bottom of the Eastern Conference was where they imagined themselves and the answer would have been an emphatic no.
Less than a month after the Dream opened their inaugural effort, they are 0-7 and the only winless team among 14 in the league. The second-longest losing streak this season is three games, held by Washington. Theybeat the Dream by six on May 27.
The frustration of Marynell Meadors, the Dream’s general manager and coach, is growing.
“This is by far our worse effort and I am disappointed in the way we played tonight,” Meadors said after Friday’s 14-point loss to Chicago. “We should have had more energy and ran our offense a lot better. Ithought we turned the corner the other night, and we could have won this game.We were tied 11 times and there were seven lead changes, so we easily couldhave pulled this game out.”
Ivory Latta said the team’s stuck with an “expansion” mentality.
“We need to go out and compete and stop thinking as if weare an expansion team, because we are not anymore.” Latta said Friday. “We have to play harder and compete better. After the last game, I felt we were able toget over the hump and ready to compete and win some games. We can’t hang ourheads because we have to play Chicago again tomorrow. We have the rest of theseason to play, so there are a few more games to get this right. We have toplay harder.”
The Dream take to the floor again on Tuesday against NewYork.
