dream_logo_small.jpgThe WNBA’s newest team will take to the court on May 3 when it hosts the Los Angeles Sparks at Philips Arena for its first preseason game, the Atlanta Dream announced Wednesday. A week later, the team hits the road for another preseason game in Phoenix.

When the Dream finally hits the court – training camp opens on April 20 – it will culminate more than a year of posturing, lobbying and planning to bring the WNBA’s 14th team to Atlanta. Since the league announced in October that it was expanding to the city, it’s been a non-stop push to lure fans, hire staff and sell season tickets. The Dream’s efforts have also included raising awareness among lesbian fans, including ticket pitches at gay events and dispatching league executive Kristin Bernert, a lesbian, to speak to the gay Atlanta Executive Network.

The Dream’s home opener is set for May 23.
