Want a glimpse of what might eventually turn up in Atlanta’s drag scene? Your chance was Thursday as LGBT students took to the stage at Kennesaw State University.
The occasion was a fundraiser hosted by the Kennesaw Pride Alliance, the campus LGBT group. “College is a Drag,” which attracted a full house to its stage in the Carmichael Student Center, benefitted Pets Are Loving Support. The non-profit, no stranger to drag fundraisers, cares for the pets of critically-ill Atlantans.
Next up for the Pride Alliance is its 9th Annual Summit on April 9. The conference includes high school and college students, faculty and staff, and gay groups. Speakers at last year’s event included Georgia Equality’s Jeff Graham, drag personality Nicole Paige Brooks and student activist Austin Laughersweller.
The school recently opened a GLBTIQ Student Retention Services resource center. The program includes a full-time staff person and provides counseling services, a multi-media library and meeting space. The center is working with the Pride Alliance on the upcoming summit as well as expanding the campus harassment policies to include sexual orientation and gender identity.
