Drag Atlanta rallied to help the victims of the Orlando gay club massacre, coming together on Saturday for a fundraiser at Jungle.
We Are Orlando, organized by veteran drag performer Wild Cherry Sucret, raised some $5,500 with an emotional show that featured a lengthy list of drag queens. Performers included Alexia Markova, Angelica D'Paige, Bubba D. Licious, Destiny Brooks, Edie Cheezburger, Evah Destruction, Extasy Grey, Jaye-Lish, Lucy Bowels, Roxy Cotton, Shavonna B. Brooks, the Armorettes, Tina Devore, Trashetta Galore and Y'Marie Santiago.
The funds, raised through tips, donations and a corporate match, will be donated to One Orlando Fund. That effort has raised $7.5 million to help the victims of the tragedy.
The event on Saturday was part of emotional of support from LGBT Atlanta since the June 13 tragedy that left 49 victims dead – including two with ties to Atlanta. On June 13, two vigils drew hundreds of people to Midtown. On June 15, some 30 LGBT and progressive groups hosted a vigil and community gathering at the Center for Civil & Human Rights. On Monday, gay state Rep. Karla Drenner led a memorial concert at the Georgia Capitol.
