Outsports, the web site that takes a gay slant on sports, is offering local teams the chance at fame and fortune. Mostly the former, but you never know.
The site is dusting off its Best Gay-Sports Group in the World award and revving up to offer it again for the first time in a few years. With the strong gay sports scene in Atlanta — from softball to swimming, running and more — the city should make a strong showing.
The contest is open to any local gay-sports team or league that focuses on a single sport anywhere in the world. So many gay, lesbian and trans people put so much time and effort into these groups, and we hope to highlight the results of that hard work.
The folks at Outsports will compile the nominees and create an NCAA-style tournament bracket. Voters from across the globe will be able to vote and crown the most noteworthy gay sports group for 2008. In this contest, size doesn’t matter.
It doesn’t matter what size group you have or where you’re from: We’ll be taking all of that into consideration as we create the brackets to give every group their best chance to win. We’ll also be handing out some special awards to groups we felt excelled in particular areas, so be sure to talk about community service, outreach and growth in your description!
Check out the site for the particulars on what you need to do to nominate a group. But be aware that the deadline is Feb. 9.
