What’s in a name? Well, a fresh attitude for one thing when it comes to Boombox, the reincarnation of DJ Vicki Powell’s former FLUX parties. Her signature event with the new title debuted to a raucous reception on Saturday.
After Powell bid adieu to the old name in September with a Farewell FLUX (view photos), the party series took its usual long winter’s nap on hiatus. Just in time for spring, Boombox emerged at The Sound Table with new energy that Powell calls a “wall of sound,” but with the same philosophy that made Flux so popular, the DJ says.
“Just like the original, Boombox is the no gimmicks dance party you’ve always loved,” Powell said before the event. “Put your dancing shoes on and get ready to get down.”
And get down they did. A mixed crowd of more than 100 men and women packed the house and fully embraced Powell’s “Get into it!” motto.
Boombox is always free to attend, but the debut event also collected more than $1,300 to benefit The Creatives Project, which puts a roof over artists’ heads and promotes creative camaraderie, educational and networking opportunities, as well as works to establish an artist mentoring program with at-risk youth.
