Democrat David Rosen has gay families in his campaign crosshairs, but in a progressive twist for Harris County, this candidate with two moms is touting “modern family” values.
Rosen hopes to unseat Republican incumbent Orlando Sanchez as county treasurer in November. And a new 30-second campaign ad shows that he hopes to motivate LGBT and progressive voters to support him at the polls.
“As your Harris County Treasurer, I will fight for same-sex partner benefits for couples like my parents who haven't been able to share health insurance in the 28 years they've been together,” Rosen says in the ad (below).
Rosen tells Houston Press that he's tired of seeing conservative politicians campaign against gay families.
“Over the past few years, the term 'family values' has been used against GLBT rights. My family's values are if you have three meals a day and a roof over your head, consider yourself lucky. Do something to help other people,” Rosen said. “I'm talking about policies that I think could help make life better for people I know who are experiencing hardships out there.”
In addition to the campaign ad, Rosen includes his support for LGBT issues among a core of four campaign values on his website.
Support “Modern Families”
The fight for GLBT equality is one of the most pressing crises of conscience facing our country. From the outset of this campaign, I am calling for same-sex partner benefits to be offered to the GLBT employees of Harris County, and for Harris County to protect all of its employees from harassment and discrimination. I am a supporter of marriage equality.
