UPDATE | DeKalb teacher accused of having sex with student found dead

A 28-year-old DeKalb County middle school teacher accused of having sex with a male student has gone missing after leaving notes apologizing for the “chaos he caused.”

Zachary Meadors has been missing since Saturday. He left his family with letters and videos apologizing “for the image they have of him now” and giving instructions for how to split up his finances, according to a missing person report filed Monday with the Gwinnett County Police Department.

Meadors is a sixth grade English teacher at Freedom Middle School in Stone Mountain. His father told police that his son was under investigation for having an inappropriate relationship with one of his students and that school officials had taken his phone. Meadors was supposed to appear at DeKalb County School District headquarters on Monday to discuss the incident but did not show up, according to the police report.

Before he disappeared, surveillance cameras showed Meadors dropping off three letters and an iPad on the doorstep of his parents’ home in Lawrenceville. The iPad contained videos of Meadors apologizing to his family, according to the police report. There were also three letters, including one to a person whose relationship to Meadors isn't clear.

“In this letter, Zachary was apologizing for all the chaos he caused,” according to the incident report. “The second letter was written out to his family. (In) this letter, Zachary expressed how much he loved his family and he apologized for the image they may have of him now.”

In the third letter, Meadors asked for his finances to be split four ways between his parents, his sister and two other people.

The incident – and Meadors' disappearance – was first reported by WSB on Tuesday. The AJC reported that Meadors is accused of having sex with a male student.

The DeKalb school district told parents in a letter Tuesday that police “are investigating alleged misconduct involving a teacher and his students.”

“The employee has been removed from the campus and directed not to return to the school,” the letter said. “We are investigating this allegation thoroughly and will take appropriate steps to protect our students. There is no place for such behavior at DCSD.”

The school district provided a statement about the alleged incident from Superintendent Dr. R. Stephen Green:

We are angered and disappointed to learn of the allegations facing one of our staff members at Freedom MS. The safety of our students is a top priority, and we are determined to protect them, under any circumstances, from harm. The community should know that the district will take whatever steps necessary to meet that standard. DCSD Public Safety officers are investigating the allegations in this case. Meanwhile, parents and staff can take comfort in knowing the employee has been removed from campus and directed not to have contact with our students. We are determined to find the truth and to correct any misconduct that is found to have occurred.

Meadors was last seen wearing a tan t-shirt with a girl on the front printed in black and white, cream pants with a black stripe and black high-top shoes, according to police. He drives a white 2018 Honda Accord with license plate RLL5682.
