For 11 teams in two divisions of the Hotlanta Softball League, this weekend is it.
Win the day-long tournament and they will join the league’s nine other teams that have already secured slots for the Seattle championships next month. Lose and it’s time to pack up the gloves and bats for the season.
On the line for the Wet Demons, one of six C teams competing on Sunday, is a chance to defend the Gay Softball World Series title they won in 2007. Last year, the team gained its berth by winning the Commissioner’s Cup, a feat they hope to repeat this weekend.
“We knew coming in that this would be a more challenging year because we were taking a step up [to C class],” says Aaron Sones, the Wet Demons’ coach. “We’ve had a lot of fun and we are battling hard. We’ll see how we will finish the season.”
Two other HSL teams won World Series titles last year. Both – the Venom from the Open Division and the Riptide from the Women’s Division – are returning to the tournament this year. Joining them on the women’s side is Gamma Light, which finished third in the D class of the World Series in 2007.

The Women’s Division continues play on Sunday, wrapping up their season on July 27. View the remaining schedule here.
