The debutantes hiked up their dresses for a little fun and joined a crowd of more than 325 people for the Atlanta Cotillion’s Annual Auction & Cabaret Show on Sunday.
The event, the largest fundraiser of the debutante season, helped raise $28,000 for AID Atlanta and set both attendance and fundraising records, according to Bryon Brown, Atlanta Cotillion co-chair.
Sunday’s event at Opera in Midtown was the last large stop on the way to the all-out drag ball Sept. 18 at the Foundry at Puritan Mill. The Atlanta Cotillion also benefits from a preview fundraiser Aug. 23 of the new production “Pageant: The Musical Comedy Beauty Contest” at 14th Street Playhouse.
The Atlanta Cotillion fashionably launched its season in March with Cocktails @ Saks 2, an evening that raised $3,345 thanks to a raffle, fashion show and the tunes of DJ Jay McCracken. The Grey Goose cocktails helped loosen up the purse strings, too. Other events along the way have included a Studs & Suds Car Wash, Cotillion Night at Mixx and Dine Out for Cotillion for Woofs.
The ball on Sept. 18 is a black-tie gala with a twist: the debs and most male guests don glam drag, and their dates wear tuxes. Female guests in evening dresses and tuxes are also welcome. A limited number of non-drag tickets to the ball are available, and doing drag gets you a discount.
