imageEverybody loves a good masquerade party, and that’s just what Purim Off Ponce: A Ball For All delivered on March 12, as the Rainbow Center hosted and benefited from the annual event.

The Jewish holiday Purim is based on the story of Queen Esther, who was afraid to reveal her true identity because she was Jewish. For the Rainbow Center, Esther’s story is a perfect connection to the coming-out process: people who once disguised their identities become free to express themselves.

imageAnd express themselves they did. This year’s Egyptian theme, “Let My People Come Out,” inspired some of the costumes (top photo), but the anything-goes party welcomed all comers—from those in simple cocktail attire to outrageous drag to homespun costumes more commonly associated with Halloween.

The whole shindig served to raise money and awareness for the Rainbow Center’s variety of LGBT and HIV/AIDS support services. The event also saw the center’s Rainbow Award go to Charlie Chasen and Beverly Korfin, both of whom volunteer and fundraise for the center.
