You’ve got to applaud the Atlanta Police Department for creating a Happy Pride! public service announcement and putting two of its LGBT officers front and center, even if some of their advice runs counter to two Pride past times: getting drunk and getting laid.
Atlanta police published the 65-second video on Tuesday, another step in their aggressive effort to show that they’ve embraced the gays and put the dark days of the Eagle raid behind them. The agency’s two LGBT liaisons, Officers Brian Sharp and Kristin Knight, narrate the video, welcome Pride-goers, offer some safety tips and let you know that the department is hiring. Yes, gays.
The safety advice that Sharp and Knight offer is reasonable, though it does run afoul of two things that some Atlanta Pride attendees relish during the weekend festival, set for Oct. 13-14: drinking too much and hooking up with strangers. For the record, Atlanta police say those are unsafe behaviors. They are probably correct. But it’s Pride. If you can’t drink with thousands – bar hours were extended, after all — and snag that cute stranger from out of town, what’s the point?
