Chick-fil-A chief hangs with Atlanta’s gay jocks

imageAtlanta-based chicken chain Chick-fil-A is known among the gays for its tasty food served efficiently with a side of its special anti-gay sauce. So color us surprised when company president Dan Cathy showed up Sunday to run with the gays in Midtown.

Cathy (second photo) leads by example when it comes to his chain’s speedy service. He won the men’s 55-59 age group of AIDS Walk Atlanta’s 5K Run with a time of 26 minutes, 34 seconds.

Yeah, the corporate executive who’s fumbled the company’s response to criticism over its $1.1 million in donations to anti-gay groups, opposition to same-sex marriage by its own foundation and its ties to groups that oppose marriage equality spent his Sunday afternoon with some 1,400 runners, many of them LGBT, jogging through the gayborhood.

Is this the start of a détente between the company and the gays who love to hate it or those who hate to love it? If Gov. Nathan Deal can pull some pork with the gays, anything’s possible. Chick-fil-A didn’t respond to a request for comment, but AIDS Walk officials confirmed it was indeed Cathy at the race, complete with a Chick-fil-A shirt.

Maybe next time, Cathy can arrive with some of those tasty chicken biscuits for the brunch.
