Cheshire Bridge’s sexy parts getting squeezed

The Botox with a bulldozer that is slowly transforming Cheshire Bridge Road may get another big boost, adding to the pressure to neuter the strip's sexy parts.

On the top end at the strip's intersection with Piedmont Road, construction continues to rebuild the downtrodden Rock Springs strip center into upscale shopping and residential destination. But now on the bottom end, Duke Homes wants to move ahead with a massive mixed-use behemoth that could claim an entire subdivision.

Curbed Atlanta detailed the expanding concept behind Cheshire Vista (image):

According to a dispatch from the Lindbergh-LaVista Corridor Coalition, Duke has made an offer to buy all 75 (!) parcels in the Lindridge subdivision, which is just west of the Cheshire Vista site. The letter suggests the developer wants to combine that land (behind McDonald's and other businesses, off Lindbergh Road) with the property they already own for a much bigger project.

“Together with the 75 properties in Lindridge,” the letter states, “they hope to develop a mixture of retail, apartments, townhouses and single-family homes with access from Cheshire Bridge Road.” The local neighborhood association held a meeting late last month to discuss the issue. Multiple emails to Duke Land Group were not returned.

That land grab would connect to Duke's 5-acre parcel abutting Lenox Road and Buford Highway. The developer says it wants to turn its existing land into a “284-unit class 'A' multifamily development.”

The corridor's gloryholes and strip clubs defeated an effort last summer to push them from Cheshire Bridge. Developers, though, may able to do what the city couldn't.

Change is already taking place between the two ends of Cheshire Bridge. One of its long-running sex spots, Inserection, thumbed its nose with ambitious plans to add bondage rooms and more to its gloryholes. A strip club catering to gay men closed. The crime-blotter fave Cheshire Motor Inn refurbished itself – kinda – though that may not be enough to save it from developers. And a gay doctor is rehabbing an office building and moving in.

As bulldozers and construction cranes move in, the battle over Cheshire Bridge's sexy parts is likely to stay red hot, like its nightlife.
